Net Roll Weight and Length: Calculation Guide

Metres per kilogram equals 1,000 divided by the measured linear weight in grams per metre. For example, a net weighing 8 g/m yields 125 m/kg before allowances. Net mass must exclude the core and packaging. GSM alone is insufficient unless the appropriate developed width or area is also known.

Use linear weight

Length in metres = net mass in kg × 1,000 ÷ linear weight in g/m. Net mass in kg = length in metres × linear weight in g/m ÷ 1,000. Exclude core and wrapping mass.

Worked example

A 500 m roll at 8 g/m contains 4 kg of net. At a hypothetical 100 currency units per kg, its material cost is 0.8 per metre. These are arithmetic examples, not a product specification or sales quotation.

Do not confuse GSM and g/m

GSM measures mass per square metre, while g/m measures mass per metre of roll. Converting requires the relevant developed width or measured area; tubular mesh stretch makes casual conversions unreliable. Confirm measured linear weight with the supplier.
